Gear Review : Salomon Wayfarer Utility Pant

When choosing pants I look for comfort, functionality and durability that I can use in both the backcountry or urban environment. Ultimately with that criteria I settled on the Salomon Wayfarer Utility Pant.

Salomon – Taking You to the Wild Playground

If you were too think about the brand Salomon you would think about elite runners and distance athletes. Well you would be correct as I did as well until a few years ago when I fell in love with their Salomon TV series. Here I realized it was a brand rooted in the mountains.  One worth trying out as a result of their passion to explore further, higher and deeper in both location and mind.

Selecting a Good Hiking Pant

Beyond all the photos, videos and visualizations that compel us to adventure it comes down to selecting gear that works. My existing pants had suffered from 3 years of abuse in the bush and sharp alpine rock from treks to summit missions.

From those experiences I knew I need a pant that was form fitting but wants restrictive. A material that was lightweight but durable and would breathe. I also wanted quick drying and DWR treated for the wet west coast conditions of BC and Washington where I spend most of my time.

Salomon Wayfarer Utility Pant – Tackle your Hike with ease

I have now had the fun of taking my pant on three different types of fun trips. I did a 13km multi peak traverse in the Sooke Hills, I did a 2 day road trip and photo assignment in Tofino and lastly I did a 3 day Alpine mountaineering trip all on Vancouver Island.

Therefore these vastly different trips allow me to provide feedback on how they performed with confidence. Favourite design element has to be the articulated cut and pattern they sew the leg and knee on the pants. The pants with this natural shape to them along with the 4 way stretch fabric allow no restriction in movement whatsoever.

The next feature I really liked was the large side leg cargo pocket. Stretchy and ample room was what I needed in a utility pocket. My backcountry navigation is done via the ViewRanger app on my iPhone 7Plus and the pocket easily accommodated it.

Final Thoughts

Overall I really liked the Salomon Wayfarer Utility Pants and would recommend them to anyone. My only issue I run into pants is my quads are fairly large compared to my waist. This results is often needing size 32 pants to fit my leg but then the waist is a little loose. I think with the 4-way stretch would allow me to get away with a smaller size for the waist and stretch for my legs.

I have yet to punish them on rough surfaces as climbing season has yet to begin. Although the fabric has handled several log strikes and bush-bashings well. It dried quickly during rest breaks also on my recent mountaineering trip in late season spring snow conditions.

Well worth considering for your next purchase from a company with a strong reputation. If you are interested in these pants consider using this link, Salomon Wayfarer Utility Pant
