For the last 6 years my journey in life from high mountaintops to how I live my daily life has evolved with a focus on making sustainable eco-conscious decisions. Those decisions range from how I look at outdoor activities to transportation and choosing eco-tourism travel destinations.
Taking an Eco-Tourism Electric Vehicle Roadtrip in Southern Alberta
With eco-tourism on a rapid rise across Canada and much of the world we should be mindful of how we choose to reach these destinations. For myself I wanted to show readers how easy it would be to drive from Canada’s West Coast to Calgary Alberta in an 100% electric Nissan Leaf.
After embarking on this roadtrip I discovered the Peaks To Prairies electric vehicle rapid charging network. This EV infrastructure has come online across Southern Alberta just this year which was perfect timing as I chatted with my pal Doc Pow at ZenSeekers , who himself has gone through the same eco-conscious awakening I have.
Doc told me about the campaign that ZenSeekers and BucketList AB has been working on with Tourism Medicine Hat and Tourism Lethbridge. I was stoked to plan my own high-energy outdoor trip to these communities. Finding activities that align with my efforts to bring awareness on sustainable low impact travel and getting outdoors more were actively being promoted and made choosing them easy. Thus I charged up the Nissan Leaf in Calgary and was ready to hit the open road.
Medicine Hat : Exploring the City with a Sustainable Footprint
Starting my trip to Medicine Hat I traveled via the Trans Canada highway shortly arriving in Canada’s sunniest city. I would spend the day exploring the outdoor natural beauty of the region. Walking around the downtown core viewing the murals, mountain biking the Redcliff river valley trails and even table tennis outside at the library. I ended the day charging up at the renewable energy demonstration system at Medicine Hat College. Going With the Flow : Low Impact & Charged Up in Lethbridge
From “The Hat” I drove west on highway 3 to Lethbridge for another day of Eco-friendly activities. The next morning I walked in Zen at Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens, Mountain biked the Bull Trail North network and then trail running Helen Schuler Nature Reserve. A high-speed charge on the Atco Peaks to Prairies station rounded put my day. Next was just the return north to Calgary via highway 2 allowing me complete this BucketList AB loop. I wasn’t sure what to expect when reaching Alberta with my electric car. Would I be able to travel these distances between cities? Would there be much charging infrastructure? Let me assure you that EV travel in Southern Alberta is expanding rapidly first hand from my own experiences. Don’t hesitate to start planning your own low impact eco-tourism focused road trip.
