Fernie Summer Activities – 5 Ways For Fun
In SouthEast British Columbia nestled in the embrace of the Canadian Rocky Mountains is an iconic town. One known for deep powder in winter but also a summer getaway for relaxation and adventure. Experience the fun Fernie summer activities waiting to be discovered on your next road trip or vacation getaway.
Recently I had the pleasure of making a trip to one of my favourite mountain towns growing up. On assignment with ZenSeekers I was headed to discover some fun ways to discover mindful Fernie Summer Activities. I had such a great time on our visit and if you like read my full story on the ZenSeekers site.
Mountain Biking around Fernie
Anyone that knows me will tell you that other than mountaineering and backpacking I am a huge passionate mountain biking enthusiast. As a lover of all that is mountain bikes I can personally guarantee you that Fernie is probably one of the premier mountain communities in all of British Columbia. Fernie has it all from the extensive local trail network of cross-country, mountain trails, pathway network, dirt jump park to the alpine resort bike park.
Trailforks shows there are over 304 recognized riding trails in the region which clearly puts mountain biking at the top for ultimate Fernie summer activities. Big shout-out to Fernie Trails Alliance and Fernie Mountain Bike Club for all the hard work they do creating and maintaining the amazing trails.
Stand Up Paddleboard on Maiden Lake
One of the nicest Fernie summer activities during those warm days from June to September is being on the water. My personal way to cool off and spend time in summer on the water is by stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Fernie is the perfect location to give SUP a try for your first time with it’s many calm water creeks and lakes such as Maiden Lake. There is also the opportunity to challenge yourself if you are a bit more experienced on the Elk River. Be sure to give Jon at Mountain High Adventures a shout if you need a rental, lessons or maybe a guided paddle.
Townie Bike Self-guided tour of Fernie
For those looking for a more mindful and relaxing Fernie summer activities experience then I highly suggest picking up a townie bike from The Guides Hut . Located in the heart of historic downtown Fernie you can easily rent your bike for the day. Explore all the amazing brick heritage buildings and be sure to visit the incredible cafe’s and pubs that now line the main street. Ride to Essential Yoga , the Spa 901 or maybe even a great sushi meal at Yamagoya (probably the best sushi I have ever had).
Hike Mt Fernie Provincial Park
Located right at the doorstep of the town is Mount Fernie Provincial Park , 259 hectares of protected mountain flora and fauna. This mountain park comprises the southern tail end of the Kootenay Range of the Canadian Rockies. At the heart of the park is the Lizard Creek that flows through the forest bringing the region to life. An extensive hiking network throughout the park offers countless outdoor adventures rounding out the 4th of my Fernie summer activities.
Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Park
Last on my list of Fernie summer activities is a stop at the high adrenaline downhill mountain bike park at Fernie Alpine Resort. Located on the mountain slopes of the Lizard Range is the home of 38 maintained trails from fun beginner green to skilled double black diamond shredders. All trails are easily accessed via their chair lifts so you can spend more time shredding downhill than peddling uphill.
