Top Things to Do in Medicine Hat

Experience Historic Downtown

With the industrial brick making history of the city, the downtown core is a well preserved architectural heritage experience. Medicine Hat downtown is a wonderful blend of shopping, parks and wonderful outdoor patios in summer amongst the brick buildings. Be sure to have your morning coffee at MadHatter Roastery and remember the huge patio at Local for supper. Don’t forget to take in Riverside Veteran’s Memorial park as well.

Medicine Hat Craft Beer Tour

The Medicine Hat craft beer tour that the local tourism office runs is a great way to see what the locals have going on. The two breweries are Hell’s Basement Brewery and Medicine Hat Brew Company (Travois Ale Works opening soon). Both breweries are full of unique surprises and hold some hidden gems about the city’s past and heritage.

Explore the Heritage Trail Network

The most notable trail system in the city would be the Heritage Trail Network. If you were to Explore Medicine Hat by bike this would be the way with over 115 kms of trail network awaiting you. Discover the paved paths. dirt trails, regional parks, playgrounds, historic landmarks and even heritage museums all from the trail system.

Download the Heritage Trail Network map brochure here or check out Trailforks.

Visit Medalta Potteries National Historic Site

With more than a century of history, the old factory with its preserved machinery and unique beehive kilns, churned out thousands and thousands of pieces of clay works back in its heyday. Now it’s home to an impressive interpretive museum, art gallery, educational centre and pottery workshop in what is designated a national historic site. Medalta Potteries ranks high for the top things to do in Medicine Hat.

Discover the Many Riverside Parks

Often dubbed the Oasis of the Prairies for its location along the river valley, Medicine Hat has developed several stunning riverside parks. Canada’s sunniest city is the backdrop to Police Point, Strathcona, Echo Dale and Kin-Coulee parks. All the parks are easily accesible by car but also for those with the energy by foot or bike they are connected to the Heritage Trail Network. Activities like swimming, fishing, boating, walking, running, birdwatching, cycling and so much more are possible. As a top thing to do in Medicine Hat only your imagination will hold back the adventure possible on a visit to any of these beautiful parks.

Broaden Your Mind at the Medicine Hat Esplanade

In the city’s heritage downtown section of First Street, stands The Esplanande. The arts hub is a stunning contemporary building and serves as the art, heritage and historical epi-centre. Take in a live performance like ballet, live music or theatrical productions. Visit the art gallery with their line-up of continually changing exhibitions. You will also enjoy the permanent archive museum highlighting you on the rich history of the city and region.

Do a Self guided Tour with Borrow A Bike

Medicine Hat Tourism offers visitors a free bike share program called Borrow-A-Bike. It is a great way to explore Medicine Hat on self-guided tours of the city at your own pace. I learned all about this great program writing my story; Explore Medicine Hat by Bike : Paths Trails & Fun . We had the opportunity to check out the network of trails, paths and urban streets that make the city so beautiful.

First Nations Heritage and Culture at the Saamis Tepee

Medicine Hat’s most visible landmark is located along the Trans-Canada highway overlooking Seven Persons Coulee. According to the StayMedicineHat website, the Saamis Tepee was originally built for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The colours of the structure are symbolic, white for purity, red for the rising and setting sun and blue for the flowing river. There are ten story-boards built into the tepee depicting native culture and history. It is the World’s Tallest Teepee standing over 20 stories high, weighing 200 tonnes and capable of withstanding 150 mph winds.
